High School & Undergraduate Internships
|
We have supported high school and undergraduate internships
since 2002. This opportunity began in 2002 when we participated in the NASA
Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP) PLUS on the Cornell
campus. In 2003, we collaborated with other plant biologists and researchers at
Cornell to initiate a program that would encourage students to consider Plant
Science careers. For more information on this collaboration and the internship
opportunities, visit the Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP)
website.

Currently we support three, eight-week summer internships
each year, recruiting from regional high school students (through our local
outreach) and undergraduate colleges (through PGRP). The internships take place
during July and August, employ state-of-the-art techniques, and are designed so
that the student efforts result in contributions to the research goals. The
projects are concise enough to be completed in the allotted time period, and
are tailored to accommodate the abilities of each student. The projects can
stand alone - in that the intern and the mentor may report on them as a
discrete contribution to research. Interns do much more than simply help in the
lab. They are immersed in the research and work on a particular project, which
is instrumental in pushing the research forward.
