Together these three interns extracted DNA from 4 varieties of rice; Ran PCR to amplify the DNA for agarose gel electrophoresis; And observed changes in base pair lengths of the 4 varieties for each of 448 primer pairs. Each primer pair targeted a different MITE (Miniature Inverted-repeat Transposable Element) in a specific location on the chromosome, making the MITE analysis possible. Their final project was a poster titled "The Little MITE that Might."

Above is a groupshot of many of the summer interns participating in the Plant Genome Research Program at Cornell University. The event, a "meet-the-interns" summer picnic, brought researchers, mentors and interns together in an informal setting.
